Tammy is a native of Southern Maine and identifies her earliest desire to create images that use design and color to express her interpretation of how she sees the world. Tammy’s work reveals how that effects her, and subsequently her audience, emotionally. Her painting is driven by an internal need to make tangible her visions. From her earliest designs in pencil to her recent collection in iridescent and flat acrylic paints Tammy strives to use each brush stroke to bring forward an original and unique interpretation. Tammy takes the smallest of ordinary details and enlarges these tiny realities to magical proportions. On the practical side each piece of art is finished with a glossy acrylic varnish to allow for cleaning with out disturbing the medium. Tammy Charles states that the process is, for her, a journey consisting first of inspiration and then action. She begins her work with a sketched interpretation of an idea or an object and creates a loose plan to finish her piece. Impulse and emotion then move her brush to a place she may not have considered at all in the beginning. As a self taught artist Tammy may break all the rules or follow an established practice as her vision guides her path. In November 2006 Tammy was elected President of Saco Bay Artists, is a member of River Tree Center for the Arts in Kennebunkport, and has shown her work in local festivals including: Saco Sidewalk Art Festival, Labor Day Art Show at Fort Williams, Cape Elizabeth, and Saco Bay Artists Shows in Ocean Park as well Art in the Park in Mill Creek Park, South Portland. A juried Show in October 2006 at the Saco Museum Judged by Chuck Thompson, Professor of Art, University of New England. Other shows Include Featured Artist Show in March of 2006 Saco Bay Artists Gallery. She also accepts commission work. 2008 Tammy taught special needs children abstract painting in a Residency program for VSA, Maine.
